Preview: Paris-Nice 2026 stage 6 – Breakaway chances?

After Jonas Vingegaard was untouchable for two days in a row, the sixth stage of Paris-Nice also offers weather opportunities for other riders. Especially the breakaway riders will sense their chance. Who will strike in Apt? WielerFlits looks ahead!

Route

The sixth stage goes through the heart of Provence. The start is in Barbentane, on the Rhône, and the finish is in Apt, right in the middle of the Luberon. The profile doesn’t look extreme on paper, but due to the succession of short climbs, it will still be a tough day.

In total, the riders face 2100 meters of elevation gain, with nearly all of that coming in the second part of the stage. That tough section begins with the Côte de Bonnieux (2.5 km at 4.6%) and the Côte de L’Aire Deï Masco (7.1 km at 4.4%). After the summit, there are still 33.2 kilometers to the finish, including a long descent.

Just before the end awaits the Côte de Saignon (4 km at 5%). Especially the last 650 meters are challenging with a gradient of 7.3%. After this, there are 4.5 kilometers remaining to the finish. The finish town of Apt is known for its markets, fruit growing, and location between cliffs and fields of lavender. Paris–Nice also visited Apt in 2020, although the route that day was much more challenging. Tiesj Benoot won the stage then.

On paper, Jonas Vingegaard could also win the sixth stage. With the margin he currently holds, the Dane should be capable of striking again. But after two consecutive stage wins—and with a tough weekend ahead—it seems more logical that Visma | Lease a Bike will allow the breakaway riders some freedom. And why not send someone along themselves? Victor Campenaerts is currently in great shape and could very well finish the job.

When looking at riders in form, we must also mention Tim van Dijke and Mick van Dijke. The two brothers from Zeeland stole the show in the fourth stage, where they towed their leader Daniel Felipe Martínez for kilometers. Will they now get to ride for their own chances? Possibly their teammates Nico Denz and Aleksandr Vlasov will also try. The latter already chose to attack in stage five, as did riders like Nicolas Prodhomme, Iván Romeo, and Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda.

Riders like Valentin Paret-Peintre, Rémi Cavagna, and Andreas Leknessund will undoubtedly have plans too, but it will not be easy for them to win. A strong sprint is an extra weapon in a stage like this, because dropping everyone on these not-so-steep climbs is not evident. That’s why we also put the names Mathias Vacek, Laurence Pithie, and Mike Teunissen on the list. They can also strike if the breakaway fails and a larger group comes to the finish.

Weather and TV

Sunny, sixteen degrees Celsius, no precipitation. The riders will enjoy nice weather again in Paris-Nice. For those fearing echelons, they don’t have to worry about wind either (2 Beaufort from the south-southwest).
