Paul Magnier ends his cycling season with an impressive nineteen victories. The French sprint sensation was also the fastest in the final stage of the Gree-Tour of Guangxi on Sunday, although this time victory did not come on a silver platter. Paul Double was heavily pressured in the finale but held firm and can call himself the overall winner.
The Tour of Guangxi traditionally finishes in Nanning. The organizers had again laid out a flat 134-kilometer stage this year, but a mass sprint was certainly not guaranteed. The riders had to overcome a real 'wall' five times on the way (1.3 km at 11.%), with the final climb twenty kilometers from the finish. Was the course tough enough to avoid a sprint?
Five-man breakaway
Five riders decided not to wait for the climb to Qingxiushan and took off early in the stage. Léandre Lozouet and Ewen Costiou represented Arkéa-B&B Hotels up front—two riders from the team that next year will no longer be part of the peloton—undoubtedly seeking some extra publicity. They were joined by Reuben Thompson (Lotto), the retiring Nans Peters (Decathlon AG2R), and Clément Davy (Groupama-FDJ).
The peloton allowed them some leeway but kept the five escapees within sight. The maximum advantage was only a minute and a half, so a regroup seemed imminent, but the leaders surprisingly held on for quite a while. Entering the last twenty kilometers, Costiou and company were still a good thirty seconds ahead of the peloton, where the riders were mainly cautious and waiting for developments.
Lafay goes for overall victory
However, the final passage over the climb to Qingxiushan definitely provided some excitement. In the break, Costiou tried to shake things up, and the promising Frenchman rode away from his companions with style. Yet, in the peloton, another Frenchman decided to make a move. It was no ordinary rider: Victor Lafay, second in the GC, just fifteen seconds behind leader Paul Double, was willing to lay all his cards on the table.
The Decathlon AG2R rider—who says he is still uncertain about his cycling career—quickly forged a promising gap, received a brief helping hand from teammate Peters on the way, and reeled in the remaining escapees, including Costiou, one by one. Lafay crested the climb with around fifteen seconds' advantage but then faced the daunting task of staying away from a chasing group of about twenty riders.
Unequal battle
For the GC leader Double, things looked bleak for a moment, but the Brit could count on help from perhaps an unexpected source in the finale: UAE Emirates XRG saw a chance to sprint for victory with Jhonatan Narváez and thus assumed responsibility in the chase after lone Lafay. This sparked other teams to join in, and there was still plenty of action behind.
A larger group—including sprinters Jordi Meeus and (especially) Paul Magnier—managed to catch up just in time, setting the stage once again for a sprint with a relatively large group. Leader Lafay was already caught again, but XDS Astana made a brave late effort to disrupt the sprinters’ plans. Anthon Charmig was the attacker of choice, but the Dane couldn’t withstand the combined power in the thinned peloton.
And that makes nineteen!
A sprint proved inevitable after all. As the bunch approached the sprint, all eyes naturally turned to Magnier. The Frenchman once again showed why he was the overwhelming favorite, although the margin at the finish was tighter this time. Stanisław Aniołkowski launched a strong late charge in the final hundred meters, but the Cofidis rider couldn’t catch Magnier.
