Unlucky Filippo Baroncini sidelined again

Things are not going well for Filippo Baroncini. The 25-year-old Italian had only been back in competition for just under two months after his horror crash in the Tour of Poland and a long recovery, but now he is out of action again. The former under-23 world champion suffered a heavy fall on Sunday in the Tro-Bro Léon, and this did not come without consequences.

"Unfortunately, Filippo Baroncini was involved in a crash at the Tro-Bro Léon. He has sustained an acromioclavicular (the joint between the collarbone and the top of the shoulder blade) injury," said Adrian Rotunno, UAE Emirates XRG team doctor, on X.

"Filippo will undergo surgical examination in Brussels before returning home. We will support him throughout his rehabilitation. We wish Filippo a speedy recovery," his team offered their encouragement.

This is another blow for Baroncini, as this is certainly not the first time he has had to deal with serious physical setbacks. The classics rider crashed heavily last year during the third stage of the Tour of Poland.

The cup of misfortune is not yet empty
He was kept in an induced coma for two weeks afterward, and things looked very grim for a time. "It is a miracle that I am still alive," he described it himself in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. He underwent surgery on his collarbone, jaw, and spine, among other injuries. At the end of March, he was finally able to make his comeback at the Tour of Catalonia.

For his team UAE Emirates XRG, the cup of misfortune is also not yet empty. Despite the successes of Tadej Pogačar, the team has struggled with a number of injuries throughout the entire season. In the Giro d'Italia, the squad was nearly halved after three days due to withdrawals of team leader Adam Yates, Jay Vine, and Marc Soler.
