Elia Viviani is performing his final act as a professional cyclist in the Six Days of Ghent and is likely preparing for a grand farewell in the spotlight. The 36-year-old Italian and his partner Jasper De Buyst are currently leading after the fifth day.
The Belgian-Italian duo has collected 247 points so far, but more importantly: the next closest teams are now only one lap behind.
The world champions in the team pursuit – Fabio Van Den Bossche and Lindsay De Vylder – have already scored 297 points but still need to gain a lap on the final day to have a shot at the overall victory. This is expected, as they are on the verge of breaking the 300-point barrier.
Still five teams in contention?
The Dutch track stars Vincent Hoppezak and Yanne Dorenbos, the Belgian-Dutch pair Jules Hesters–Yoeri Havik, and the Germans Roger Kluge and Tim Torn Teutenberg are also trailing by one lap, so they have not been ruled out of the win yet.
The rest of the field no longer has any illusions, with deficits of four or more laps. This afternoon, the climax of the 84th Six Days of Ghent will take place in the Kuipke velodrome, where we will see the successors of the Belgian-French duo Fabio Van Den Bossche and Benjamin Thomas crowned.
