Wout van Aert recovers from illness and starts in Le Samyn

Earlier this week, he had to miss the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, but Wout van Aert is back for the final part of the 'Opening Weekend'. On Tuesday, the leader of Visma | Lease a Bike will start in the Ename Samyn Classic.

The organizers of the Walloon 1.1 race confirmed Van Aert's participation via social media. The Kempen rider returned sick from the training camp in Sierra Nevada that was meant to prepare him for the upcoming classics season. He was already back on the bike last Sunday. The race was always on his program, but it was a question of how quickly he would recover.

Last week, team director Grischa Niermann told us that he plans with Van Aert on the medium term. “Wout is now heading into a long period with many great races. Hopefully, the illness won’t affect his ability to start that period in improving form. Hopefully that will already be the case on Tuesday in Le Samyn, Saturday in Strade Bianche, and then also Tirreno-Adriatico. We hope he regains full fitness as soon as possible.”

The Dutch WorldTeam also has, among others, Christophe Laporte and Per Strand Hagenes on the start list.
