Almeida and Vingegaard equal Heras' record on Angliru
After 25 years, the climbing record on one of the most famous and brutal ascents in pro cycling was equalled today by Joao Almeida and Jonas Vingegaard. The two strongest riders of this Vuelta managed to complete the 12.8 km of the climb in 41 minutes 55 seconds, exactly the same time as Roberto Heras in 2000. This extraordinary performance was possible thanks to the supersonic pace of UAE lieutenants Jay Vine and Felix Grossschartner on the first, easier part of the climb followed by Almeida's relentless push all the way to the top. The overwhelming favourite, Jonas Vingegaard was not able to place a single attack against the unleashed Portuguese and so the fight for the Vuelta title will continue in the coming days.
