Dorian Godon has won the Tour de Vendée. The French champion was the fastest in a bunch sprint. Emilien Jeannière (second) and Giovanni Lonardi (third) completed the podium in the final round of the Coupe de France. The overall victory in that points classification went to Clément Venturini.
The Tour de Vendée, which returned to the calendar after a year’s absence, featured a course that was not too challenging. It covered flat to rolling roads from Saint-Mesmin to Dompierre-sur-Yon. The expectation was that after 203 kilometers, the race would be decided in a sprint finish in the latter town.
But five riders refused to accept that scenario. Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Jakub Otruba (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Yohann Simon (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93), Maximilien Juillard (Van Rysel Roubaix), and Diogo Goncalves (FEIRENSE-BEECELER) took an early breakaway.
The five got a nice gap and stayed ahead for a long time. Goncalves held out the longest, but was caught three kilometers from the finish line. A small group grabbed him and tried to stay clear of the peloton. However, they were unsuccessful. In the end, it was a straightforward sprint in Dompierre-sur-Yon.
Godon wins in Vendée, Venturini secures Coupe de France
That sprint was won by Dorian Godon. The French champion from Decathlon AG2R was clearly the fastest. Emilien Jeannière (TotalEnergies) took second place, while Giovanni Lonardi (Polti VisitMalta) rounded out the top three. Clément Venturini also stepped onto the podium after the race. The Arkéa-B&B Hotels rider had to settle for fourth in the stage results but secured the overall victory in the Coupe de France.
