Italian cyclist Giovanni Carboni is currently suspended by the International Cycling Union due to unexplained irregularities in his biological passport. According to the UCI, these irregularities were detected in 2024. This occurred before he joined Unibet Tietema Rockets. The team has also suspended him with immediate effect.
Unibet Tietema Rockets issued a statement expressing shock at the news, "because it goes against our values and principles. We are fully committed to transparency, integrity, and the fight for a clean sport. We await further communication from the authorities."
"As a member of the MPCC, we support clean sport and cooperate fully with all investigations by the relevant authorities," the team’s communiqué states. "Furthermore, we have initiated an internal investigation."
Carboni was in his first season with Unibet Tietema Rockets. In 2024, the year when the irregularities were detected, he raced for JCL Team UKYO. That year, he won two stages and the overall classification of the Tour of Japan, and also claimed victory in the third stage of the Tour of Bulgaria. In previous years, Carboni rode for Equipe Kern Pharma, Gazprom-RusVelo, and Bardiani CSF Faizanè.
