Should Laurens Sweeck be worried about the further progression of his cyclocross season? The Belgian suffered a serious crash on Monday at the X2O cyclocross in Loenhout. Sweeck was subsequently taken to the hospital, reports Het Nieuwsblad.
There was not much discussion afterwards due to the incident in the opening lap involving world champion Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert’s two punctures, but Sweeck crashed hard after just over forty minutes of racing.
Sweeck lost control of his bike while entering the Brechtseweg — where the finish line was located — and went down. The Crelan-Corendon rider remained on the ground, grabbed his left arm, and minutes later officially withdrew from the race.
Clavicle fracture?
The 32-year-old Sweeck was immediately transported to the hospital afterwards. It is still unclear what injuries the Belgian sustained from the fall, but HNB mentions 'a possible clavicle fracture.'
It is to be hoped for the experienced cyclocrosser that it’s not too serious, as Sweeck is currently leading the World Cup standings, with the Belgian Championships in Beringen (January 11) and the World Championships in Hulst (February 1) still upcoming — two very important cyclocross events.
