Lidl has acquired a majority stake in the cycling team Lidl-Trek. Earlier this season, it became known that the international supermarket chain wanted to take over most of the shares, and last Friday, the contract to realize this ambition was signed. The bike brand Trek still retains a significant share in the WorldTeam.
Midway through 2023, Lidl came on board as a sponsor of the team featuring riders like Bauke Mollema, Mads Pedersen, and Jonathan Milan. The supermarket chain replaced Segafredo as the title sponsor. Since then, the German company has expressed the ambition to acquire the majority of shares in the (currently) American team and thus become the main sponsor.
That ambition has now been realized. Last Friday, the parties signed a contract during the team camp at Lidl Germany’s headquarters in Bad Wimpfen.
With the new ownership structure, Lidl and Trek aim to achieve their shared goal: making Lidl-Trek the most successful team in international cycling. To accomplish this, there are plans for a new logistics center where the team’s operations will be based, as well as a dedicated performance facility.
