Lorena Wiebes has once again emphasized that she has set her sights on the Amstel Gold Race this spring. The multiple winner sees the Dutch hill classic as the perfect challenge. She said this in front of our camera during the team presentation of SD Worx-Protime.
After checking off Milan-San Remo from her classics list last year, Wiebes now wants to make her mark in the Amstel Gold Race. "I want to take on that challenge, to see how far I can go there," said the queen of victories in 2025. "Last year, I also had a very good day there (she won the sprint for sixth place, ed.). It was a strange race situation then, but I feel like I’m growing in that race. Racing in the Netherlands also gives extra motivation, of course."
Wiebes is mainly known as a sprinter, but she definitely feels the urge to try her hand at the classics as well. "I need that challenge. That’s why I also choose challenges on the track and gravel. I want some variety."
Sporting revenge
The Amstel Gold Race is 'the big goal of the spring,' Wiebes stresses. Does she feel she still has unfinished business in the AGR? In 2024, she crossed the line celebrating, but was narrowly beaten by Marianne Vos.
"I would say: for myself, I want sporting revenge. Compared to last year, a few more percentage points need to be added in certain efforts. I think I’m fairly on the right track there. We also do lactate tests at training camp, and that was well in order. But then you still have to show it in the races."
