
Wout van Aert blames no one but himself: "I did everything to be ready for San Remo"
After missing two editions, Wout van Aert will be back on Saturday at Milan-San Remo. The Belgian did not have a flawless preparation due to a broken ankle and illness before the Omloop, but gradually the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider is returning to his best form. "I have done everything to be ready for Milan-San Remo," Van Aert tells his team’s website.
"I skipped Milan-San Remo for a few years, but this season I absolutely wanted to be back," says the Belgian. "The race is one of the most beautiful on the cycling calendar. I enjoyed watching last year’s thrilling edition, so it’s extra motivating to be lining up again soon."
What Van Aert can achieve on Saturday in La Primavera remains uncertain. However, last week went well for Van Aert at the Tirreno. "Overall, I’m satisfied with how I felt during those races. I had a good week at the Tirreno-Adriatico, where I was able to test myself several times."
"It’s the start of an important month with many top classics. I hope to show myself everywhere. I’m not starting as a top favorite, but with the goal of winning the race. I absolutely believe in my chances. Milan-San Remo is a race where many scenarios are possible," he concludes.
