Mads Pedersen to start in Milan-San Remo on Saturday after all

Mads Pedersen will still participate in Milan-San Remo on Saturday. This was announced by Lidl-Trek via social media. A surprise, as team director Kim Andersen stated last weekend that the Dane would not start in La Primavera.

Pedersen broke his left wrist and right collarbone in a crash early February during the first stage of the Tour of Valencia. A more unfortunate start to his season was unimaginable. Due to the severity of the injuries, his spring classics campaign was uncertain. While the recovery of the collarbone has progressed well, the fracture in his left wrist faced more complications.

Initially, Lidl-Trek hoped Pedersen could start Milan-San Remo, but last weekend Andersen suggested that the Monument was still too soon. Now it turns out Pedersen is ready in time after all.

Pedersen: "Really nice to be back so quickly"
“Honestly, the plan was not to race San Remo," Pedersen says on the team website. "But we have done some really good training sessions and wanted to measure specific values to see if I could also contend for a strong result in this race. After a few tough workouts this week, we believe it’s a good decision to get back racing, pin on a race number, and feel comfortable in competition again.”

"Of course, the doctors and my coach also had a say in how and when I could return. Dr. Jens (the team doctor, ed.) ran many tests on me and my hand. He is 100 percent confident that I can race again now, so it’s really nice to be back so soon. It’s great to be at this point and to be able to start here in Italy. It’s a good step towards the Belgian classics.”

No Milan
Pedersen has raced Milan-San Remo four times, from 2022 to 2025. He finished sixth, sixth, fourth, and seventh respectively. For the upcoming edition, he will start alongside at least Mathias Vacek and Søren Kragh Andersen. The full Lidl-Trek lineup for Milan-San Remo has yet to be announced. However, it is clear that Jonathan Milan will definitely not participate on Saturday. The Italian fell ill after Tirreno-Adriatico.
