Matteo Jorgenson has grown into one of the key forces at Visma | Lease a Bike over two seasons. Nonetheless, the 26-year-old American did not immediately accept a new offer from the team early last year.
In a team video, Jorgenson explains that he initially hesitated because he wanted to be sure he could continue his life as a cyclist for a longer time. "It's difficult to keep constantly improving. I see this season primarily as a success in my personal life rather than on the bike. In terms of results, it was comparable to last season, maybe even slightly less, but I have become more comfortable in my role as one of the leaders within the team."
"My personal life in Europe has become more stable, and I feel more grounded in my profession. That’s why I extended my contract. I wanted to feel that I could sustain this for an extended period before signing a contract that commits me to the team long-term. I already received an offer early last year, but it took months before I felt comfortable with it. That was the result of reflecting on whether and how I could continue as a pro. It demands many sacrifices, and I am aware of how much I have to give up. I wanted to feel comfortable with that," Jorgenson said.
In the end, the two-time Paris-Nice winner decided to put his signature on a new deal through 2029. "Signing the contract felt like an important moment. I’m very happy that I mentally went through this process and made a long-term commitment to the team and the people."
