Overall leader Juan Ayuso crashes hard in Paris-Nice

Juan Ayuso came down hard in Paris-Nice. The GC leader did get back on his bike, but then he went down again. He will abandon the race.

It was chaos anyway in the fourth stage of Paris-Nice. Early in the stage, the peloton split into several echelons. In the first group of about forty riders, there was a crash involving Oscar Onley, Daan Hoole, and Bert Van Lerberghe. While Onley was able to continue, the Dutchman and the Belgian both had to abandon.

At that moment, Ayuso was still safely in the first group, but about fifty kilometers from the finish, there was another incident. On the wet roads, Ayuso crashed along with Brandon McNulty, Nils Politt, Iván Romeo, and Raúl García Pierna. The yellow jersey wearer was the biggest victim. Initially, he tried to continue, but he soon dismounted and lay down on the roadside in a lot of pain. It was clear: he could not go on.
