Modern road cycling isn’t always very exciting. That’s what Peter Sagan thinks. “I’m not saying it’s boring, but… it’s true that sometimes you know who will win two hours before the finish,” said the three-time world champion in conversation with Marca. “That changes the feeling a bit.”
According to Sagan, cycling has become more controlled in recent years. “But even when I was still racing, it was controlled as well: anti-doping tests, weight, nutrition, everything. Now it’s even more so. Everything is measured even more precisely. And science has undoubtedly taken another step forward,” said the Slovak, who raced his final road events in 2024 for the continental team Pierre Baguette.
In particular, Tadej Pogacar often decides the race early on. Yet the Slovenian receives all the praise from Sagan, who also praises Jonas Vingegaard and Mathieu van der Poel. “They have a different way of racing, that’s for sure. But the level is incredibly high. Together, they deliver a fantastic show for the fans.”
