Will we see Remco Evenepoel in the Tour of Flanders for the first time next spring? It’s quite possible. The Olympic champion has sent two draft race programs to the management of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. One is a 'classics program' featuring the classics and the Tour de France, the other combines the Giro d’Italia with the Tour.
REV shares his story with Het Laatste Nieuws. “At the moment, there’s a plan A and a plan B on the table,” he says. The Tour is the main goal in both cases. “In principle, yes, although even that isn’t 100% certain yet. It’s a somewhat atypical Tour. Tricky. A bit of everything, everywhere. But still attractive. It will be a fun challenge again. But there are other great goals as well.” It is already clear that Evenepoel won’t start his season before February – at the Volta ao Algarve or the UAE Tour.
“The first plan includes a classics campaign, the second the Giro,” he explains. “Based on the Giro’s stage schedule, which will be announced soon, we are internally reviewing and consulting on what’s physically and training-wise feasible. Keeping the World Championships at the end of the season in mind, since I want to be at my best there. After the Tour, I will take a break again to then get ready—via races like the GP Québec and Montréal—for the Canadian rainbow races.”
Currently, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe is studying Evenepoel’s proposals, which according to him always involve sacrifices for certain races. If it is decided that the Belgian will not race the Giro, the opportunity arises for Evenepoel to try Milan-San Remo and/or the Tour of Flanders. “As long as it doesn’t come at the expense of the ideal path towards the Tour,” he says. After the release of the Giro route at the end of this month, the decision will be made.
