The Rwandan capital, Kigali, will host the Road World Championships between September 21 and 28. In fact, the Rwandan government is essentially shutting down Kigali for an entire week. Schools will be closed, and people are encouraged to work from home as much as possible.
Kigali itself will be difficult to reach by car for a week. "However, we will set up the necessary alternative routes and communicate them in a timely manner," the Rwandan government writes on social media. "In this way, we aim to manage traffic effectively and prevent major congestion."
For Rwanda, hosting the Road World Championships is a milestone in the country's history. In the same press release, the African nation warmly invites the public to come and take a look. "We invite everyone to experience our unique country. During the Worlds, we will set up special fan zones in the city to give spectators the chance to see the world’s top cycling talents up close."
