Freshly crowned world champion Tadej Pogačar will make a bid for the European Championship on Sunday, a race he has never won before. He had announced that afterwards he would only compete in the Giro di Lombardia, the Italian autumn classic that he has won the last four years. However, another race may be added to his schedule.
According to the usually highly reliable Ciro Scognamiglio from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pogacar will start Tuesday's Tre Valli Varesine. "Starting at the EC most likely means I cannot participate in other Italian classics, except for the Giro di Lombardia," the Slovenian had said earlier about this.
He appears to have reversed those words now, adding Tre Valli Varesine—one of his favorite Italian autumn classics—to his program. He has raced this event four times before, finishing third, first, and fifth in successive editions. Last year's edition was cancelled after a few dozen kilometers due to severe weather.
