According to Het Laatste Nieuws, Lidl-Trek is interested in signing Florian Lipowitz, but it is uncertain whether the American team has a chance of securing the German rider. Cycling journalist Daniel Benson reports that the 25-year-old stage racer has already extended his contract with his current team Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe.
After the Tour de France, Lipowitz reportedly put pen to paper on a longer deal. In the recent edition of the Tour de France, Lipowitz emerged as a serious GC contender by finishing third overall after three weeks of racing.
Benson does not know the duration of the new contract, as Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe never comments on contract lengths. The journalist expects clarity soon, possibly during the team’s training camp in December.
It seems Lipowitz is no longer attainable for Lidl-Trek, at least not in the short(er) term, although cycling teams are increasingly willing to buy out ongoing contracts. For example, Lidl-Trek recently spent heavily to acquire Juan Ayuso from UAE Emirates XRG.
The American team's interest in Lipowitz is understandable. The German supermarket chain Lidl has been the main sponsor since mid-2023 but is about to become the majority shareholder of the American team. With this structural change, Lidl-Trek aims to develop into the best cycling team in the world.
