The UCI has provisionally suspended another rider due to irregularities in his biological passport, following Oier Lazkano. The rider in question is António Carvalho Ferreira. The 36-year-old Portuguese cyclist competed last season for the continental team Feirense-Beeceler and has previously achieved multiple successes in the Volta a Portugal.
Carvalho Ferreira faces a provisional suspension due to suspicious fluctuations in his biological passport in 2018, 2023, and 2024. These irregularities violate the anti-doping regulations of the international cycling federation.
The UCI refuses to make further statements while the process is ongoing, but the deviations in the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) of the Portuguese veteran have been deemed unexplained. An ABP is an individual electronic file for each rider, compiling the results from all doping tests collected as part of the ABP program over a certain period.
Well-Known Name in the Portuguese Circuit
Since his debut in 2013, Carvalho Ferreira has competed almost exclusively at the continental level but is certainly a recognized name in the Portuguese cycling scene. He has recorded numerous successes on home soil in the past. For example, he won a stage in the Volta a Portugal in 2019, 2020, and 2022. He also stood on the final podium of this multi-day race twice: finishing third in the 2022 and 2023 editions.
Furthermore, the experienced rider was once runner-up Portuguese national time trial champion (’19) and earned a bronze medal in the Portuguese road race championship. As a young rider, he also won a stage in the Volta ao Alentejo in 2013.
