Why we might see Jonas Vingegaard again in the 'double' cycling shorts
Jonas Vingegaard secured a memorable victory in Paris-Nice on Wednesday, but afterwards, the spotlight might have been even more on his striking clothing choice. The Danish winner’s ‘double’ race shorts caught attention, and we might see the Visma | Lease a Bike rider wearing them again later this week.
At first, it wasn’t entirely clear on screen what wardrobe choices the Dane had made, but in the cold and rainy conditions, Vingegaard was well bundled up. After he removed his rain jacket, it appeared he was riding with two pairs of race shorts layered over each other. The top pair even partly covered his race jersey.
From the entourage of Victor Campenaerts, Sporza received information that his teammate Victor Campenaerts had personally sewn the chamois out of Vingegaard’s long race shorts before the start of the stage, so that he could wear them over his other shorts. This led to plenty of (mostly hilarious) reactions on social media, and Vingegaard himself could laugh about it afterward.
The day after, Vingegaard and Campenaerts appeared together in front of Sporza’s camera and naturally discussed the striking race shorts. “Victor and I got a little scared two days ago,” Vingegaard explained ahead of the fifth stage. “We have bad memories from last year (referring to his crash and concussion, ed.) and therefore chose long winter shorts.”
No time for a ‘strip act’
“I asked Victor to remove the chamois, and I made some cuts myself. The plan was to rip open the shorts and take them off, but those guys from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe had other ideas.” Because of the hard work done by the German team, there was no time to take off his first pair of race shorts.
“I could have really helped with that strip act. That would have been spectacular and would’ve added even more shine to the performance,” Campenaerts jokes in his characteristic, humorous style. “But luckily Jonas didn’t have cold legs.”
Vingegaard doesn’t rule out that he might need the double race shorts again in one of the coming stages. For example, bad weather and even snow are expected on Saturday when the queen stage to Auron is on the schedule. “Who knows. I won’t throw them away. Maybe I’ll already need the shorts again on Saturday.”
A unique look for Jonas at Paris-Nice 😅
