A new name and start location, but Gent-Wevelgem sticks to its familiar route
As previously announced, Gent-Wevelgem will now be known as 'In Flanders Fields. From Middelkerke to Wevelgem'. In addition, the WorldTour one-day race will no longer start in Ypres but in Middelkerke, while the riders can still expect a familiar finale.
The route of In Flanders Fields, from Middelkerke to Wevelgem – formerly Gent-Wevelgem – was presented on Wednesday. The men will start on Sunday, March 29, from Middelkerke, finishing after just over 240 kilometers in Wevelgem.
From Middelkerke, the riders pass through Nieuwpoort, Diksmuide, De Panne, and Veurne, before a stretch through 'De Moeren' after about 70 kilometers of racing. This drained marshland was long a swampy area and often guarantees crosswind action.
Familiar tough climbs
After De Moeren, the riders continue on the same roads as in recent years towards the finale in and around Wevelgem. The women's race finale follows the same route as the men's.
In the second half of the race, riders face – as usual – several climbs including the Baneberg, Monteberg, and the Kemmelberg. Additionally, three unpaved Plugstreets are again included in the route.
