Does Filippo Ganna offer a solution for Wout van Aert in Milan-San Remo? "His wheel is the right one"

In an analysis in the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, Marc Sergeant shed light on Wout van Aert’s chances at Milan-San Remo. The former Belgian champion and Tour de France stage winner, but above all the key figure behind the Lotto team until 2021, has a very striking tactic in store for the Kempen rider from Visma | Lease a Bike.

Van Aert managed to secure fifth place in the transitional stage to Martinsicuro, but what impressed Sergeant most was his aggressive racing style. “The cadence with which he rode in the tough Saturday stage of Tirreno promises a lot of good things. But is it enough to win San Remo? We must be honest: against this Van der Poel, that will be very difficult,” Sergeant said.

So how should Van Aert approach it? “My advice: Van Aert should focus on Ganna. Also a heavyweight, just like Van Aert, and—as you saw in Tirreno-Adriatico—in very good shape. Last year, Ganna couldn’t keep up with Van der Poel and Pogacar on the Poggio either, but in the descent, he had the power to reconnect and finish second.”

“Ganna’s wheel could be a good wheel for Van Aert to follow on Saturday,” concludes the experienced man.
