Philipsen, Milan, and Magnier get chance for revenge in Tirreno-Adriatico finale
The puncheurs and climbers have had plenty of opportunities in this Tirreno-Adriatico; on the final day, it's the sprinters’ turn. The previous sprint showdown ended somewhat surprisingly with a victory for Tobias Lund Andresen. Fast men like Jasper Philipsen, Paul Magnier, Arnaud De Lie, and Jonathan Milan will be eager for revenge. WielerFlits looks ahead!
Route
Tirreno-Adriatico traditionally finishes in the Adriatic beach town of San Benedetto del Tronto. The seventh stage is 143 kilometers long with 1,100 meters of elevation.
After a flat opening section of 25 kilometers, the riders reach the Montefiore dell’Aso (10.9 km at 3.4%). Following the descent, they climb again to Ripatransone (8.5 km at 4.6%). Once back down, they race towards the finish town of San Benedetto del Tronto. There awaits a flat circuit of 14.5 kilometers that will be ridden five times. The course is not exactly the same as last year but strongly resembles this year’s route. Last year, Jonathan Milan took the stage win.
Classifications
Favorites
It would be surprising if we don’t see a bunch sprint on Sunday in Tirreno-Adriatico. Therefore, we focus on the fast men as the favorites. On paper, Jonathan Milan is the fastest of the bunch, but the Italian was somewhat underwhelming in Wednesday’s stage. He slowed down significantly and had to settle for seventh place.
After a tough week and a fairly challenging initial phase of the stage, Jasper Philipsen might have the edge. Although the Belgian from Alpecin-Premier Tech has yet to secure a win this year. Unlike Milan and Paul Magnier, who hit the mark twice at the Volta ao Algarve. The Frenchman is our top favorite.
We must also definitely mention Tobias Lund Andresen. After all, the Dane won the third stage, beating all the previously mentioned names. He was also supported by a very strong lead-out from Decathlon CMA CGM. Arnaud De Lie finished second in that stage and is therefore also a contender to watch. The last star goes to Sam Welsford from INEOS Grenadiers.
Weather and TV
It will definitely rain on Sunday along the Adriatic coast, but the precipitation seems likely to fall mostly in the evening. With a bit of luck, the riders will stay dry. The sun will also make regular appearances, and temperatures will be around fifteen degrees Celsius. The wind (3 Beaufort) will come from the east-southeast.
