Tobias Lund Andresen beats Arnaud De Lie and Jasper Philipsen in Tirreno-Adriatico
The third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico was won by Tobias Lund Andresen. The Dane from Decathlon CMA CGM was the fastest in a bunch sprint after a long day in the saddle. He beat Arnaud De Lie, Jasper Philipsen, and Paul Magnier.
Stage three of Tirreno-Adriatico stretched over a hefty 225 kilometers and included a fair amount of elevation gain, although the climbs were not excessively tough. The longest ascent was to Petrella del Salto (7 km at 4%), with the summit located just under forty kilometers from the finish line. The terrain wasn’t completely flat after that, but experienced sprinters shouldn't have had any problems. Still, the breakaway riders were by no means without a chance.
However, only one rider attacked during the rainy early phase. Diego Pablo Sevilla rode solo for more than eighty kilometers but eventually decided to call it a day. The Spaniard from Polti VisitMalta waited with 130 kilometers to go for the peloton. After that, little happened for a long time, except for an intermediate sprint. GC leader Isaac Del Toro took an extra bonus second there.
So, a quiet approach to a bunch sprint? Not exactly. With 25 kilometers remaining, the race suddenly lit up following an attack by Jonas Abrahamsen. The Norwegian from Uno-X Mobility brought along Liam Slock and Ethan Hayter, and behind them there was unrest. However, after a few kilometers, the three attackers were caught and order was restored. End of the intermezzo.
We were then 'just' set for a bunch sprint. We saw, among others, the teams of Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step), Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek), and Tobias Lund Andresen (Decathlon CMA CGM) positioned near the front entering the final kilometer, while Jasper Philipsen’s Alpecin-Premier Tech squad was further back. Approaching the last 500 meters, Decathlon took the lead.
Milan led out in the French train and launched his sprint from far out. However, he quickly had to sit back down and lost speed. Tobias Lund Andresen, the designated finisher at Decathlon, seized his moment and came out of the wheel. The Dane then held off Arnaud De Lie and the suddenly appearing Philipsen from behind. This marked his third victory of the season already.
