Zana succeeds Sagan as overall winner of Giro di Sardegna, Donati fastest in final stage
Filippo Zana has won the Giro di Sardegna. On the final day of the five-day race, his leader’s jersey was never seriously threatened. The stage victory went to Davide Donati, who had also claimed stage two earlier in the race.
The final stage of the Giro di Sardegna ran from Nuoro to Olbia, covering a distance of 177 kilometers. Early in the stage, the riders climbed to nearly 900 meters altitude, but then quickly descended towards the coast for a relatively flat finale. Filippo Zana held a comfortable lead and seemed on course for the overall win. It was expected that the day would mainly be about the stage victory.
There was little enthusiasm for an early breakaway. Only one rider tried to prevent a bunch sprint with a long attack. Riccardo Perani (Beltrami TSA Tre Colli) launched a solo move and gained almost seven minutes' advantage. He rode a long solo, but was no match for the chasing pack. About twenty kilometers from the finish, he was caught.
Donati takes his second
We then saw an attack from Diego Uriarte, but his effort ended one and a half kilometers from the line. It would come down to a sprint. In that sprint, Davide Donati showed the fastest finish. The Italian talent from the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe Rookies secured his second win of the week.
Zana finished safely in the peloton and was crowned overall winner. The rider from Soudal Quick-Step succeeds Peter Sagan, who won the Giro di Sardegna in 2011. Since then, the Italian stage race had not been held.
