It is official: Biniam Girmay will ride for NSN Cycling Team from 2026, the successor of Israel-Premier Tech. This was announced today by the Swiss team. The Eritrean, who is transferring from Intermarché-Wanty, has signed a contract until the end of 2028.
Girmay joined (then still called) Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux in August 2021, after spending his first year and a half as a pro at DELKO. At the Walloon team, Girmay – who still had an ongoing contract until the end of 2028 – grew into a world-class rider. In spring 2022, he became the first African winner of Gent-Wevelgem. The absolute highlight was the 2024 Tour de France, where Girmay won three stages and the points classification (green jersey).
A new chapter
Now Girmay is moving to NSN Cycling Team, where he will once again be the leading rider. Team manager Kjell Carlström is thrilled with the arrival of the Eritrean. "We are incredibly excited to welcome Biniam to NSN Cycling Team," says the Finn on the team website. "2026 marks not only a new chapter for the team but also for Biniam, and I can’t imagine a better moment to start this new chapter together."
"Biniam embodies everything we love about cycling. His talent is clear, but his humility and drive make him an exceptional rider. From the very first conversation, it was clear he shares our vision, both on and off the bike, and I have no doubt he will be a fantastic asset and a leader for our team, inspiring our riders and the entire cycling community."
Girmay wants to win
Girmay himself is also ‘very happy’ with his move. "Especially with a new atmosphere and a fresh start, for me and for the team. As a rider, I always find it important to have a good environment, and I have already heard many positive things from my new teammates. Looking back at the last two years of the team, they have improved enormously. There is a really strong team spirit."
"Regarding the team’s sprint train, they have always been very strong. Especially how they stuck together and motivated each other. I have often heard them motivating each other during races, so I am really looking forward to working together. I see a great opportunity at NSN Cycling Team and I feel this is the best choice for my future."
Girmay’s goal at NSN is simple. "To win races. I love winning classics, and so far I’ve only won Gent-Wevelgem, so I want to achieve more together with the team. I believe that one day we can win one of the biggest races in cycling together."
