Stage 16 Piazzola sul Brenta - San Valentino di Brentonico (203.0km)

After a day of rest, the riders must be able to handle it again. And that will be necessary, because it immediately concerns the stage with the most elevation meters of this entire Giro d'Italia. With five substantial Alpine giants, the classification will probably be thoroughly shaken up over the almost five thousand elevation meters. The final climb from Brentonico is the most difficult of all.

But first things first: because the start is a dream for culture lovers, who can see the historic Villa Contarini up close. From the palace - in Baroque style - the riders are shot through the town of Piazzola sul Brenta in the province of Padua.

After a good hour of racing, the riders enter the Trentino region and there the climbing festival can really begin with the La Fricca climb. From there you could say that the entire stage doesn't know a single flat meter anymore. Fricca is especially a nice warm-up for what's to come, the 13 kilometers at 4% don't scare many riders.

The steeper Candrai climb, or the first half of the legendary Monte Bondone climb, is good for 10 kilometers at 7%. It's also the first of three first-category climbs that will be waiting in the stage. In between, however, the much easier Vigo Cavedine of third category must first be conquered.

After 150 kilometers of racing and with a good fifty kilometers to go, the work begins that the cycling fan will certainly relish. First the Santa Barbara (12.7 kilometers at 8.3%), which sees its steepest sections rise to 14%. The climb is also called the Monte Velo and is already a good preview for the final climb of the day.

And then we're talking about the San Valentino climb, which is climbed from Brentonico. With its 18.2 at 6.2%, it's a reasonably long climb, but the average gradient doesn't do justice to the difficulty of the climb. It concerns a col in three steps with again steep sections up to 14%. Money time for the classification men, thus!
