Stage 11 Viareggio - Castelnovo ne' Monti (186.0km)

For the first road stage after the rest day, the organization has designed a stage that still begins relatively easily, but after a good eighty of the 185 kilometers, the terrain changes considerably. The stage is spiced up with three difficult climbs, of which the first is by far the most challenging.

The stage is flagged off in Viareggio, a seaside resort in Tuscany known for its beaches and art nouveau architecture. One of the most famous Carnival celebrations in all of Italy is also organized there annually, but there is little reason for celebration this time.

After almost two hours of racing, the Alpe San Pellegrino awaits, which appears for only the fourth time in history and for the first time in 25 years. It concerns a rather difficult first-category climb, with gradients up to 20%. In total, it's 14.2 kilometers at 8.7%.

After a long, winding descent begins the climb to Toano, which with its 11.2 kilometers at 4.9% and a second category is already less impactful. Then it winds towards Pietra di Bismantova, a symbol of the finish town that carries only 6.5 kilometers at 5.2% and is on paper the easiest climb of the day.

After the top, there are still five kilometers of both ascent and descent before we finish in Castelnovo ne' Monti. On paper, you could really consider this as a pure stage for escapees. Classification riders should in principle not get into trouble.
