Stage 4 Alberobello - Lecce (189.0km)
After a rest day, the Giro d'Italia crosses to the other side of the Adriatic Sea on Tuesday, to Apulia, where the first mass sprint of the Giro is on the program.
The fourth stage counts 187 kilometers and starts in Alberobello. It's the city of the thousand trulli, the iconic white houses in Apulia that are also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The riders will undoubtedly have time for some sightseeing, as there will be few elevation meters along the way and it won't be too intensive a stage.
From Alberobello, they first ride eastward, via a small fourth-category climb, to the coast, from where the riders will head even further south on Tuesday. The finish is in Lecce, where a local loop is also made in the final kilometers.
Lecce has often seen the Giro pass by in the past. The last time, however, was more than twenty years ago. Back then, Alessandro Petacchi won ahead of another Italian hero, namely Mario Cipollini.
