Stage 3 Piacenza - Torino (230.8km)

First Chance for the Fast Men at the Last Finish in Italy

On the third day of the Tour de France, the sprinters will wake up in a good mood. The riders will race 229 kilometers from Piacenza to Turin, where a mass sprint is the most likely outcome.

The starting location of stage three is better known in Italy as La Primogenita, or the firstborn. Piacenza, called Plaisance in French, is considered one of the first cities of the Kingdom of Italy, when Italy was unified in 1861 under King Victor Emmanuel II. Today, however, Italy is a republic, and Piacenza is more famous for its residents like Giorgio Armani or former footballer Filippo Inzaghi.

The finish location is a city with many faces. Above all, Turin, the capital of the Piedmont region, is known for its impressive architecture and art, stemming from its Roman history. The city also recently shone in the musical spotlight, hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022, where Ukraine took home the victory.

Additionally, Turin excels in the sports arena. The 2006 Winter Olympics, football clubs Juventus and Torino, and the finish of the ancient semi-classic Milan-Turin are all linked to this city. The cycling race has been organized since 1876, making it the oldest classic in the world.

Milan-Turin has ended in a mass sprint in three of the last four editions. This outcome also seems the most likely for the third stage of the Tour heading towards Turin. Although the route features three categorized climbs, the sprinters need not fear today. Which of them will strike the first blow in the battle for the green jersey?
