Stage 6 Mâcon - Dijon (163.5km)

Flat, Flatter, Flattest Towards Dijon

Stage six from Mâcon to Dijon offers the peloton the third sprint opportunity of this Tour. The riders will crest the only climb of the day 153 kilometers from the finish, while the stage itself totals 163 kilometers. The sprint teams will have plenty of time to reel in the breakaway.

On this Thursday, the riders will hear the start signal in Mâcon. The city lies on the banks of the Saône River and in the heart of the Mâconnais, the largest wine region in Burgundy. This wine area is renowned for its excellent white Chardonnay. Wine lovers can indulge themselves in Mâcon, which even has a theme park dedicated to the love of this alcoholic delight.

We are highly likely to see a sprint finish in Dijon. The mustard city of France is the capital of the Côte d'Or department and has been involved in the Tour since its early years. In 1906, after a stage of 416 (!) kilometers, the finish line was drawn in Dijon. René Pottier crossed the finish line first that day, with a lead of more than three-quarters of an hour. He would later go on to win the fourth edition of the Tour.

Over a hundred years later, the riders face 'only' 163 kilometers. After just a few kilometers, they will conquer the Col du Bois Clair (1.8 km at 5.7%), after which virtually flat roads will lead them towards Dijon. There, an 800-meter straight finish line awaits the fastest men on earth. Flat, flatter, flattest indeed.
