Stage 13 Cabázon de la Sal - Alto de l'Angliru (202.7km)
The thirteenth stage of the Vuelta brings out the Beast of Asturias. Exactly: the Alto de l’Angliru. The stage starts in the early afternoon in Cabezón de la Sal and serves up a brutal 202 kilometers with nearly 4,000 meters of climbing. Once again in this Vuelta, the run-in to the decisive final climb is mostly flat. Only after 150 kilometers does the road truly begin to rise, with the Alto de Mozqueta (6.6 kilometers at 8.4%).
That is followed by the punishing Alto de Cordal (5.4 kilometers at 9.3%). Though already irregular and extremely tough, the Cordal feels like nothing more than a speed bump compared to what comes next: the Alto de l’Angliru. The Angliru is one of the most brutal ascents in Vuelta history and has been featured many times before. The most recent occasion was in 2023, when Jumbo-Visma took a historic one-two-three with Primož Roglič, Jonas Vingegaard, and Sepp Kuss. Do we even need to mention the average gradient? All right then: the Alto de l’Angliru is 13.1 kilometers long, with an average of 9.5 percent.
