Stage 5 Figueres - Figueres (24.1km)
After three days in Italy and one day in France, the Vuelta a España finally reaches Spain (though not for the entire race, as Andorra still awaits). Figueres, a small town in Catalonia best known as the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, serves as the backdrop for the team time trial. In the past, several Volta a Catalunya stages finished here, often ending in a bunch sprint.
But Wednesday won’t see a mass sprint. The team time trial covers 24 kilometers of fairly straight roads. The total elevation gain is just over 100 meters, but that won’t make much of a difference. In the first twelve kilometers, the teams ride north, then head south in the final twelve kilometers back to Figueres. The last kilometer features a slight uphill.
It’s also the first TTT in the Vuelta in two years. The previous team time trial in the Vuelta was in Barcelona, which — to put it mildly — was spoiled by the evening twilight.
