Stage 4 Susa - Voiron (206.7km)

The fourth stage of the Vuelta goes from Susa in Italy to Voiron in France, covering a total of 206 kilometers. The first eighty kilometers of the stage are particularly challenging as the riders must cross the Alps, but the final 120 kilometers are almost completely flat as the peloton heads toward Voiron in the Grenoble area.

After the start in Susa, the road immediately begins to climb. The Puerto Exiles is the first obstacle of the day. With an average gradient of 6.2% over 5.8 kilometers, the climb is easy compared to what’s coming later. Shortly afterward comes the Col de Montgenèvre (9 km at 5.6%), which has sections exceeding ten percent in gradient.

The finale of the difficult opening phase begins in Briançon, where the riders reach the foot of the Col du Lautaret (9.2 km at 5.2%). Once at the top of this climb, the riders are at an altitude of nearly 2,100 meters!

After the Lautaret, the stage becomes much less demanding. A long descent of more than 50 kilometers follows, and after Grenoble, there is an intermediate sprint in Noyarey. The riders then have around 30 kilometers left to cover. These are almost entirely flat, although the road rises by 2 to 3% in the final kilometers.
