Stage 14 Avilés - La Farrapona (135.9km)
Stage fourteen of the Vuelta is the conclusion of a brutal Asturian double-header. This time, the riders won’t face just one, but two of the region’s legendary beasts. The total elevation gain once again approaches 4,000 meters — though the riders will cover about seventy kilometers less than the previous day.
The stage starts in Avilés and finishes atop the Alto de la Farrapona (16.5 km at 6.2%). On paper, it may not look too daunting, but the final 5.5 kilometers average a brutal 10%. It’s a climb the peloton will definitely fear, especially since before reaching it they must already tackle the Alto Tenebreo (5.7 km at 6.2%) and the Puerto de San Lorenzo (9.4 km at 8.8%).
